The most amazing thing happened today. I went to a little cajun food place down the street. Now it's local, but it's a pretty big deal around here, with three locations and big catering business, it's not just a little mom and pop place.
I only had a credit card on me and they only accept cash and checks. I told the guy I'd run home and grab some cash. And he said "Don't be ridiculous, it's freezing out. Just pay next time you come in." He wrote down the amount I owed on a little receipt slip and handed it to me with my food. He didn't take down my name, he didn't write himself a receipt. Just handed me $14.50 worth of food and a slip of paper and let me walk out the door.
I didn't know things like that were even possible anymore.
In creepy news, my friend ultrasounded me when we were bored the other night and the little embryo dude is in there sucking its thumb. It actually took its thumb out of its mouth, punched me, then put it back in a few times while we were watching. Its brain isn't even remotely done developing and its already figured out how to stick its thumb in its mouth. And punch my uterus. I can't quite feel it moving yet, I just feel little flutters and cramps from time to time but its actually rolling around in there, crossing and uncrossing its legs, pushing me. I can't think of anything creepier. I have the official boy vs. girl ultrasound in 3 weeks. It will be nice to not have to speak of it gender-neutrally anymore, but it does make the whole thing weirder and weirder the closer to a real live baby it becomes.
When I pictured having children, I always pictured them as older teenagers, home from college. We have meaningful conversations about life, I give them some good, generic advice, a piece of cake, some tea, and some money. They hug me, take off, and never call, and that's about it. That would be alright. I have no idea what to do with an infant or a toddler or a 4 year old or a 10 year old in my house in 24 hours a day.
Everyone keeps saying I'll dig it once it comes out. It remains to be seen.
Happy chanuka everyone!
